Hong Kong in Pictures
Is Hong Kong on your bucket list? It should be! I have put together a photo diary from this exciting city to give you an idea why it is such an awesome place to visit. Here are my best photos of Hong Kong to inspire your wanderlust:
I suppose I have to start with the most iconic view of Hong Kong… from Victoria Peak! Did you know this view is absolutely free? You can pay for a viewing platform that is slightly higher but I personally think you can save your pennies when the free view looks like this 😉
I 100% recommend taking a walk all the way round Victoria Peak for a 360° view of Hong Kong, not just from the one spot!
What a better place to eat the famous egg waffle than Victoria Peak? Actually no, this one wasn’t the best I tried… but at least it looked good? 😀
Hong Kong is a city of epic views… this one is from Kowloon:
Don’t forget to take the ferry across Victoria Harbour when you are in Hong Kong. It’s a fun way to travel between Kowloon and Hong Kong island and it’s super cheap! (I paid HK$2.50 for one way which is about 25p in the UK or 30c in the US… whaaat?!)
Hong Kong is a city with the most skyscrapers in the world! Yes, even more than New York City. The building on the left is the iconic Bank of China:
Look up!
Buildings are not only tall, they are also colourful… Are you in love yet??
Can you spot the “Ding Ding”? Taking a ride in Hong Kong’s double-decker tram is a must… they are pretty slow but hey, ideal for sightseeing!
There are so many footbridges in the central district in Hong Kong… Good luck trying to find the right one! 😀
To me, Hong Kong felt like a mixture of London, New York City and China… Anyone agree?
Hong Kong used to be a British colony and it’s still very obvious nowadays. English is one of the official languages, they drive on the left, have the same sockets as the UK and you just find a lot of British products and companies here… and double-decker buses of course (they even use Octopus cards that work like London’s Oyster cards!). I spent six years living in London and coming to Hong Kong made me feel almost “at home” 🙂
The famous Mid-Levels escalators are not just your ordinary escalators. People use them to commute to and from work! It’s the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world – it crosses several streets and connects downtown with the Mid-Levels district. In the morning it runs downhill to bring people to work, then it changes and goes up for the rest of the day. How cool?!
Definitely ride the Mid-Levels escalators at least once to feel like a local (or a tourist :D). Either way, they offer a totally unique perspective of the city.
I loved walking the streets of Hong Kong! It’s the best way to take in the atmosphere, observe local life and discover. You can even find a lot of street art if that’s your thing 🙂 Just be warned: Hong Kong’s climate can get really hot and humid, especially around summer!
By the way… if you are confused about whether Hong Kong is a city, a country, part of China or what, I have written a long(ish) Instagram post that explains it all 😉
And I have saved the best for last… the most colourful estate I have seen! (And you probably have too because it has been all over Instagram 😀 )
Looks familiar yet?
The Choi Hung Estate gets super busy since everyone wants their photos with the amazingly colourful backdrop. There are always all sorts of photoshoots going on… so I decided to set up my own one in the corner, away from everyone else 😀
This place got so popular that “No ball games” signs have been put up… on this basketball court!! It doesn’t make much sense, right? Luckily, the kids still play there, as they should 😉
I only had a few days in Hong Kong and my main mission was sorting out a visa to China so I definitely want to come back and explore more! Have you been to Hong Kong? What did you think? Let me know in the comments! 😉
